WALKING IN THE WAYS OF THE KINGDOM

A one day experience in San Francisco sponsored by ReIMAGINE!
Contact us at info@reimagine.org to set up a day for your group.

DESCRIPTION:

The day will consist of an orientation and teaching on prayers from Scripture, a casual walk through three neighborhoods, (including maps and directions) with opportunities to explore and connect with people, and dinner and reflection at an International Restaurant.

ReIMAGINE has been leading groups on these experiences for years because we have found it a good way to help people develop a fresh perspective on the Bay Area. San Francisco is, in some senses, a microcosm of the diversity of the Bay Area. We hope that by participating in this exercise your heart will be expanded in terms of having a desire to see your community in new ways and reimagine how you can walk in the way of love in your community.
With these day exercises, we see ourselves as teachers and guides for helping you connect what you know of the story of God to a specific cultural context.  In a sense we are hoping to help you think and act like a pioneer missionary who is trying to understand how the gospel intersects with a particular people group.

SUGGESTED DONATION:

$30 - includes dinner at an Indian/Pakistani Restaurant

SKILLS WE WILL BE PRACTICING:

1. Prayer — according to patterns in five Scriptures.
2. Creativity — by making your own intercessory poetry, drawings or photographs.
3. Hospitality and listening — opening ourselves up to people, asking questions, and hearing their stories.

5. Partnership — we will be doing this day together as companion followers of Jesus.

1. To practice prayers of the Bible.
2. To gain exposure to a diversity of cultures and people groups.
3. To practice God's heart for all people.
4. To cross cultural and social boundaries
5. To practice spiritual formation in creative ways.

•    A granola bar or other snack to give away to someone who might be hungry.
•    Extra money in case you want to take someone you meet out for lunch with you.

PRAYERS INSPIRED BY SCRIPTURE THAT WE WILL BE PRACTICING:

1. “Creator, show me where your glory is already displayed in this place and among these people.” In Romans 1 it is written: ”For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made....”
All of creation speaks to the reality of God. Look for and give thanks to God for his glory and creativity displayed in all that you see. Look for the half full part of the glass of God’s world.

2. “Creator, help me to think your thoughts and feel your feelings for the people and places that I see.”  In Luke 4 Jesus proclaimed the year of the Lord’s favor on all people. “  The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”

It is the creator’s heart for everyone to experience the full extent of love.
3. “We want to see your kingdom come and your will be done here and now as it is in heaven.” As you notice things out of God’s intent, ask God to restore his Genesis Vision.

4. “We come against the spirit of darkness in this place in the name of Jesus.” In Ephesians 6 Paul urges that our battles are with spiritual principalities and powers. And so we can address these in the name of Jesus.

5. “May your peace and prosperity be on this place and these people.” The instructions to the exiles in Jeremiah 29 were to settle into their cultural context and ask God to bless the people they were living among.

PRINCIPLES WE WANT TO APPLY IN THIS EXERCISE:
•    INVESTIGATION.  Paul spends time looking around Athens before he speaks-- asking questions about their culture and how they see life.
•    CULTIVATION of Spiritual Disciplines (Practices) that help form us in the way of Jesus.
•    INCARNATION-- entering into the life and common experiences of people. Go into places you would not normally go in your context: churches, temples, various shops, etc
•    CONVERSATION Meeting people and learning to listen. Jesus started conversations sometimes by asking for help.
•    SECRECY:  Jesus said don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing when you help. Explore ways you can be sneaky about compassion.
